Nikolaus Pevsner An Outline of European Architecture , Penguin, 1960Reprint edition with a difference; this book was first issued as a modest paperback in the Pelican series in 1943. This sixth edition is a large-format (25.5 x22 cms) hardback, originally issued in both a dustwrapper and slipcase., with the subtitle 'Jubilee Edition'. 'This edition is a completely new venture. for the first time the detailed text of Pevsner's book is as fully illustrated as it deserves. Moreover the author has added a completely new chapter dealing historically, appreciatively and critically with architectural developments from 1914 to the present day... There are over 600 plates, and without exception they are of the very highest photographic quality available.' It is given the number Q27, and appears in this unique guise in Penguin's Miscellaneous series. The Jubilee in question is Penguin's – 1960 was their anniversary year. This was nice little gesture to Pevsner for his unstinting work on several series. Prestel, meanwhile, had done all the work for a large German edition of the book; they sourced all the photos. So this is a slightly re-anglicised version of the Prestel German text. The book itself is in excellent condition. The dustwrapper has two small tears on the front, and is damaged around the top of the spine. And like all copies of the book, does not fit the book too well (presumably the result of pulling in and out of the slipcase. The slipcase, incidentally, is missing. (Book ref.
