In Against the Tide Mrs. Lethbridge continues the story of her fight with severe physical disability which she began in Fortune Grass. This book deals with her marriage to a vicious drunkard and her efforts to escape from him, taking their child with her. She hides in the Seven Dials district of London, at that time a curious underworld full of strange, not particularly honest but often delightful people. Her description of life in a boarding house there with its infinite variety of inhabitants is startling and often very funny. But as with her earlier book, Against the Tide is primarily an account of her very remarkable battle with and victory over her considerable physical disfigurement.
