Small neat inscr to front free endpaper, otherwise near FINE in VG price clipped d/w.William Lambarde wrote his Perambulation of Kent in 1570 as part of a projected 'Topographicall Dictionarie' of the whole of England, and it is the first topographical survey ever to be published in Britain. Lambarde was an eminent lawyer who eventually rose to become Keeper of the Records in the Tower. In this book he describes the `severall Regiments, Bishops Sees, Lasts,Hundrethes, Fraunchises, Liberties, Cities, Markets, Burroughs, Castles, Re-ligious Houses, and Schooles : the Portes, Havens, Rivers, Waters, and Bridges' and provides a detailed history of the county, and of each place mentioned, from the earliest times.
