Lambarde was an eminent lawyer who eventually rose to become Keeper of the Records in the Tower. In this book he describes the `severall Regiments, Bishops Sees, Lasts,Hundrethes, Fraunchises, Liberties, Cities, Markets, Burroughs, Castles, Re-ligious Houses, and Schooles : the Portes, Havens, Rivers, Waters, and Bridges' and provides a detailed history of the county, and of each place mentioned, from the earliest times.
