Just starting to split at front endpapers, otherwise a G++, uninscribed copy, clean, bright and tight. Methuen list for Autumn 1939 laid in at back. A very rare item as most of the print run was lost in a WWII air raid fire. Many accounts of the Franklin expedition have been published. But none have been comprehensive and nearly all have appeared incidentally in books dealing primarily with either the search for the Franklin expedition, or bio-graphy, or Arctic exploration as a whole, and therefore only partially or indirectly with the fortunes of the expedition itself. This book is the result of an endeavour to fill this gap. In two respects, however, the writer has stepped beyond the strict limits of his undertaking. The proceedings of Sir John Franklin and his officers and crews after their departure from Baffin Bay cannot be described without frequent reference to the labours of those who followed in his wake; hence a brief account of the search for the lost expedition has necessarily been included. Again, the writer has attempted to present an outline of the principal events which, while not associated with the search itself, have occurred in connexion with the ill-fated enterprise.
