ROPER William Oliver The Churches, Castles, and Ancient Halls of North Lancashire , Lancaster: E. Ans J. Milner, 1880.First Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good +/No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall Very nice copy of this complete part-work about buildings of north Lancashire. The author was Deputy Town Clerk of Lancaster and became Town Clerk in 1892. The index covers 210 pps including a 26pp appendix, but there is a 24 pp addition in rear covering three other buildings, Bolton church; Borwich Hall with 3 plates. The index lists 29 illustrations, but not the Map of Lancaster, and the Pedigree of Rigge of Cark Hall. All plates present, but not always where the index says they will be. The book has been recased in black morocco with gold lettering to the spine, probably about 1930 (owner's name to fep dated 1933). A previous owner has neatly annoted in ink in various places, inserting the author's name and his history beneath the title, and elsewhere where there are lists of office holders this has been extended in ink, oftern up to 1920's. Certainly not a defect. Page edges show some spotting as do the prelims, and some pages show foxing, but a very uncommon title in remarkable condition for its age. A singular and collectible item.
