"This edition is printed for private circulation only." The son of a clergyman, Alec de Candole was born at Cheltenham in January 1897. Educated at Marlborough College, he left in April 1916 to enlist. He was commissioned in the 4th Wiltshire Regiment and sent to Flanders in April, 1917, where he was wounded in October 1917. During his recovery at home he wrote "The Faith of a Sulbaltern: Essays on Religion and Life." On his return to Belgium in July 1918, he joined the 49th Company, Machine Gun Corps at Ypres. He was killed in a bombing raid on 4th September 1918. Pp.92, owners penciled name to front free endpaper has made a corresponding indentation through to the title page. Grey card cover, spine darkened. Scarce. VG. (Book ref. 36614)  £50.00
