CHATHAM, Earl [ General John Pitt ]: 19th Century hand-written letter signed by the Earl of Chatham . , February 13th 1818 .

Full letter reads: "Abington Hall, near Cambridge, February 13th 1818 . My Dear Sir, I trust you will forgive my giving you this trouble, in conveyance of a letter I have received this mornig from Sir Wm. Bellingham, enclosing to me one, he had received from you (of 3rd), and also one addressed to Lord Liverpool, which he desires me to forward if I approved the decision he had taken. He has stated to me in his letter, the substance of what he has said to Ld. Liverpool, and this perhaps, I may not think it improper, exactly as I could have wished, shall as the matter, I conceive proper in point of time, I would beg of you to send it to Lord Liverpool, unless ( which I should think preferable) you should deem it sufficient for you to say ro Mr. Long, that you were authorised by Sir Wm. Bellingham to desire that his name might not be included, in the Anderson Estimates to be bought forward this year - Believe me, My Dear Sir Yours very sincerely Chatham . P.S. I have pretty well succeeded in deciphering your letter, I could not make out from whence it was dated and have therefore sent it under cover to Mr. Long, at the Pay Office." ** " General John Pitt, 2nd Earl of Chatham, KG, PC (9 October 1756 – 24 September 1835) was a British peer and soldier. He was the eldest son of William Pitt the Elder and an elder brother of William Pitt the Younger. He was commissioned into the 47th Regiment of Foot in 1774. Later he served in various capacities, including First Lord of the Admiralty, Lord Privy Seal and Lord President of the Council, in the Tory cabinets of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In 1809, during the Napoleonic Wars, he commanded the British force in the Walcheren Campaign. He was Governor of Gibraltar from 1820 to 1835. In 1816 Abingdon Hall and its grounds were let on an annual rent to Lord Chatham, brother of Pitt the Younger. George, the Prince Regent, sought a new PM but the first four men whom he attempted to appoint were unable to form ministries. Liverpool was the king's fifth choice of Prime Minister. Liverpool reluctantly accepted office on 8 June 1812, hoping to find and train a more brilliant successor. He served until 17 February 1827. During his long tenure of office, he allowed his Cabinet ministers to conduct their duties without overdue interference. Consequently, Liverpool's role has been minimised by historians although the mediatory role of Liverpool was crucial in holding together his ministry." - See Wikipedia . **** Sir William Bellingham, 1st Baronet (c. 1756 – 27 October 1826) was an Irish-born British politician and the "controller of the storekeepers' accounts" for the Royal Navy.
