17TH CENTURY BIBLE - AUTHORIZED / KING JAMES VERSION .: The Holy Bible, Containing the Old Testament and the New : Newly translated out of the Originall Tongues : and with the former translations diligently compared and revised : by his Majesties speciall commandment. Appointed to be read in churches. , London : Printed by the Company of Stationers, 1647.

One of the first bibles ever printed by the Company of Stationers (See Herbert, 598). A very good late 19th century full leather binding. Very clean throughout, every page with a red-lined border. 8vo. Unpaginated [878pp.] 7" x 4.5" x 2" Plain brown calf with two white metal clasps (both in working order). Spine with four raised bands, blind stamped decorated compartments, gilt title: "Holy Bible" and gilt date: "1646". All page edges bright gilt. The original 17th century leather covering (with intricate blind stamp decoration) of each board has been carefully preserved and laid-down to the inside of each board. Marbled endpapers . Original endpapers with copious notes in a contemporary hand. The book begins with: "The Book of Common Prayer... R. Barker & assigns of J. Bill, 1642 (Referenced by Griffiths 1642/3), lacking the title, but is otherwise complete. Followed by: " The Genealogies... by J.S... Anno Dom. 1643.", the title page within a woodcut border. Followed by a double-page map: "A Description of Canaan..." Followed by: "The Holy Bible...". Engraved title with architectural columns and King David with a harp at the base of the page. The contents page does not list the books of the Apocrypha, however these books are included in this copy. The New Testament title is absent. The New Testament is otherwise complete, ending with a colophon: "London: Printed by the Company of Stationers. 1647." Bound with: "A Briefe Concordance... Printed for N. Bourne and J. Young, and are to be sold by Charles Green ..., 1646." (Referenced by: Wing D2066) . Bound with: "The Way To True Happinesse, Leading to the gate of knowledge. Or An entrance to faith, without which it is impossible to please God. Newly corrected and augmented. Printed by James Young, [1646?] " . Bound with: "The Historie of the Bible : Briefely collected by way of question and answer. Written by Eusebius Pagit, and by him corrected. Printed at London : By I. L[egat]. and are to be sold by Simon Waterson, 1627. " (Referenced by: STC, 19108.5) . Bound with: The Whole Book Of Psalmes... printed by A[braham]. M[iller]. for the Companie of Stationers.
