Volume I. Watchers of the Sky, presents stories of the great astronomers from Copernicus in the form of narrative verse. Vol.II. The Book of Earth, is a "hymn of evolution" telling the stories of Pythagoras to Darwin and Huxley, again in narrative verse. Vol III. The Last Voyage, written after the death of the author's wife and his conversion to Catholicism, "deals with the men who have made modern surgery and therapy what it is - Harvey, Pasteur and Lister - and with the philosophers from Bacon to Renan who did much to bring about the great modern struggle between religion and science, in face of the riddle of death. It closes with a vision of a God of Love and an ordered Universe." All three volumes are clean throughout although the rear hinge of Volume I and the front hinge of Volume II are cracked. Blue cloth with beautiful colour illustrated titles pasted to front covers designed by Spencer Nichols, gilt titles to spines. The dustwrappers of all three books have the same coloured illustrations as the boards, all have losses to edges and to spine but are now protected by removable clear protective wraps.
