Second edition (First edition published in 1801). A very good full leather binding. 8vo. 7" x 4.25" x 1". Original brown calf with gilt ruled decoration. Smooth spine with original black leather title label and gilt decoration (rubbed). Hinges carefully strengthened. Inner gilt dentelles. Marbled endpapers. Previous owners signatures to front free-endpapers. Wood cut to title page, and at the beginning of some poems. Clean throughout. A delightful book. The Sidney Melmoth appears to have compiled this collection, motivated by pity for the poor and downtrodden. Excerpt from 'Advertisement' : " Among the many Selections of British Verse, scarcely one will be found, in which the Beauties of our ancient and modern Bards are indiscriminately commixed, or wherein the Compiler has taken sufficient pains to introduce only those who bear the indelible stamp of spueriorty, and which are never reviewed but with increased pleasure and admiration. Without considering what period gave them birth, and directed, in great measure [A2v:] by the opinion of CONNOISSEURS of acknowledged celebrity, the Compiler of the present Edition, wandering in the grand Paterre of Genius, and attentive to the different Tastes and Dispositions of Mankind, has collected a BOUQUET which, he flatters himself, will not be unacceptable to the Lovers of the British Muse, or unedifying to those whose attention may have been led, by pursuits of another description, from the study of this distinguished branch of Polite Literature."
