Folio. 12" x 8.5" x 3" (30cm x 22cm x 7.5cm) . Front cover with central gold coloured cross, embossed images of the 12 apostles and malachite cabochons to each of the four corners. The spine with an embossed of image of Jesus. The rear cover has embossed pattern and central cross (there is also a small dent to the base of the cross). All page edges gilt (a little rubbed). Endpapers and last few leaves with a vertical crease. Clean text throughout with 88 coloured illustrations. A very good copy of a French Bible in a scarce and valuable binding. pp.1027/[1p.]/pp.267 . This is the 1961 reprint of the 1905 edition. Rough tranlation of the colophon: " This edition of the Bible of the Canon Crampon, enriched with the portrait of S.S. Pope Jean XXIII and 88 reproductions of works of art inspired by the principal biblical episodes, under the direction Mr. André Sauret, of Desclee and Co., editors, Tournai (Belgium). The portrait of the Holy Pope is from a photograph by Felini and was printed on the presses of Draeger Brothers, at Montrouge. The illustrations were printed by N. V. Joh. Enschede, Haarlem (Holland), and the maps by the printing works of Michard, Paris. Printed October fifteenth, nineteen hundred and sixty and one . ** Augustin Crampon ( 1826 - 1894 ), canon of the cathedral of Amiens , translator and scholar of the Catholic Bible. He undertook the translation of the bible from the original Hebrew , Aramaic and Greek texts, directly into French. Augustin Crampon first studied theology and the exegesis of the Bible edited by the Orientalist Arthur Le Hir ( 1811 - 1868 ) and then began teaching at the minor seminary of Saint-Riquier . He devoted himself first to the translation of the Gospels , based on the Greek text, and taking into account the style for each evangelist, this work was published in 1864 . He was made Canon of Amiens ,but still continued his work on the biblical texts until his death in 1894. However, the "translation Crampon", was completed and revised, and first appeared in a bilingual edition (Latin text of the Vulgate appearing opposite translation French ) in 1904.
