(Van Riebeeck Society Second Series No.1). Adam Tass was born in Holland but at the age of 29, in 1697, he left to join his aunt and her husband at Stellenbosch, in the Cape. He became secretary of the "Brotherhood" which viewed the VOC administration as corrupt and dictatorial. He was arrested and incarcerated for thirteen months in the Cape Town Castle for raising a petition against Van der Stel and sending it direct to Amsterdam.
