First ( & Only?) Edition. Decorated Cloth-Covered Boards. Hardback, 180mm x 260mm tall (7.27" x 10.25" approx.). Pp xx, i, 440, with a tissue-guarded b/w studio portrait photo frontispiece plate of the Author, 40 plates, 30 sepia vignette illustrations, and with three folding maps, loosely inserted in a pocket to the rear board. Wear to the head of the spine joints; patchy external rubs and fading; a [school library?] label residue to the front pastedown, and 'Withdrawn' stamp impressions to the front and rear free endpapers. [no other library markings]. Internally very good. Original maroon cloth-covered, bevelled-edge boards/gilt titles, and with a gilt vignette to front board of a spear-bearing native standing behind a recumbent lion to the front board.
