Spines have 5 Raised bands with gilt titles on dark red grounds in 2nd compartments. Leather corners. Marbled Endpapers. Contains the Prefaces to the Editions of 1828 and 1847 as well as the new preface dated 1864. Also a memoir of Noah Webster and a Brief History of the English Language. Illustrated with small In-Text Woodcut illustrations. Frontispiece of Vol 1 has an engraved Portrait of N. Webster. Special Features of this Edition: Revised Etymology; Revised Definitions; Illustrative Citations; Additional Words in the Vocabulary; Scientific & Technical Definitions; Collection of Synonyms/Pictorial Illustrations (over 3,000 inserted in the body of the work; Vocabularies in Appendix re-edited; Pronunciation of English Words. 11" Tall. Previous owner's inscription on preliminary page, dated 1867. Some wear to covers, Vol 1 has a closed tear along side of spine for half its length. Vol 2 has closed tears down both sides of spine.
