Ian Balding was son of a racehorse trainer and his elder brother was another trainer Toby Balding. His first full-time position in horseracing was with Peter Hastings-Bass, but Peter after only three months and Ian was appointed trainer. Ian trained many great horses including the American owned and bred Mill Reef who went on win the Epsom Derby, the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot racecourse and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Lonchamp in France. Mill Reef was eventually given a rating of 141 by Timeform. Another memorable horse was the sprinter Lochsong who was the greatest of her generation.
