Phil Bull was professionally known as William K Temple. There were several top class racehorses in training during this flat season. The author Phil Bull at this time considered speed to be the most important factor for racehorse form. The best two-year-old was the colt Dante who had the fastest performance of 1.41 and went on to win the Epaom Derby. The fastest three-year-old sprinter was Pamphilos and he was rated 1.37 fast.
