The Vincent O'Brien, Irish trained racehorse Sir Ivor won the Newmarket 2,000 Guineas and the Epsom Derby ridden by Lester Piggott. The colt may not have stayed 12 furlongs so he was held up by Lester for a late run. He went on later in the season to win the Laural Park Washington International race once again by a very late run.
