The 1997 flat season was a truly great season for the French. Peintre Celebre a son of Nureyev and trained by Andre Fabre won the French Derby and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and was the highest rated Timeform Champion three-year-old by eight points. He won the Arc in record time with Pilsudski in second place. The older English trained racehorses were much better class with Pilsudski, Swain and Singspiel winning the honours. Thoroughbred breeder Sheikh Mohammed was the leading owner with his brother Sheikh Hamdan the runner-up. Michael Stoute was the champion trainer by earnings. Whereas John Gosden was champion trainer by the number of races won. Keiron Fallon with 202 winners was the champion jockey with Frankie Dettori and Kevin Darley the runners-up.
