Although Arthur Waley (1889-1966) never set foot in the Far East and had no formal training in an Oriental language, he became possibly the most widely known Orientalist of his time. During eighteen years as Assistant Keeper in the Department of Prints and Drawings of the British Museum, he produced a body of work-including translations of THE TALE OF GENJI, THE ANALECTS OF CONFUCIUS, MONKEY, and THE NO PLAYS OF JAPAN -that not only unlocked the treasure house of Far Eastern culture for the Western layman but won for Far Eastern studies a prestige and lustre in circles where they had not previously been regarded as of serious intellectual concern. In addition to providing what Francis Johns modestly says is `as complete a record as possible' of the published writings of this remarkable scholar, this bibliography incorporates additions and corrections made by Arthur Waley and others in response to a previously published checklist. The result is a genuinely comprehensive and accurate survey of a career that included three dozen full-length books, memorable translations, and innumerable articles and book reviews, that extended into the most diverse areas, from Chinese and Japanese art, philosophy, and culture to anthropology and metrical form. Francis Johns served for eight years in the Royal Air Force, during which his stay in China led to a special interest in Chinese culture. He was a librarian in England and Canada before beginning his studies at Rutgers -the State University, where he secured his B.A. and M.A. as well as his degree in librarianship from the Graduate School of Library Service. The author of bibliographical and bibliothecal articles in journals, Mr. Johns in 1965 re-discovered and published the Chinese Poems (1916), which nowhere bore Arthur Waley's name as translator. A Fellow of The Library Assf~ciation (Great Britain) and a member of The Oriental Ceramic Society and The Bibliographical Society of America, he is now University Bibliographer at Rutgers.
