As a member of the circle of Charles I and Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, and as a friend of Rubens, Van Dyck, Paul Bril and Peter Oliver, Norgate participated in the English artistocracy's deliberate assimilation of European artistic culture. Written first in 1627-8 and then substantially revised in 1648, his Miniatura contains unique reports. on the artists' theoretical views. It is also the fullest account of technique in Tudor and Stuart miniature painting. It lays out in detail the methods employed by Hilliard, Issac Oliver and John Hoskins for everything from preparation of pigments to lighting in the studio - and compares these with practices in the Netherlands, France and Italy. -Miniatura also contains information .which is central to the history of landscape painting, drawing and pastel. Many foreign terms and ideas about art were introduced into English here for the first time. This new critical edition of Norgate's text is presented from a variety of historical angles.
