Hascltine, the nineteenth-century American landscape painter, was a link between the Romantic and the Impressionist schools, and he has often been called a pre-Impressionist and a follower of Monet. This biography is by his daughter, and is characterised by a sincere and informed appreciation of the artist as well as by a revealing picture of the man. Haseltine studied at Dusseldorf, Barbizon and Rome, and combined the outstanding technique of Dusseldorf draughtsmanship with the Barbizon cult of `plein air'; he was an indefatigable worker and, besides many paintings, left one thousand sketches in oils and water colours. Shortly before the recent war there were various exhibitions of his work in America, and his pictures were commanding a ready sale. Though American art has diverged far from the methods of the nineteenth century, the crowds that visited these exhibitions were evidence of the keen interest that his works continue to arouse.
