This volume is a revised and enlarged edition of a valuable work which appeals to the archaeologist, the historian and the general reader. It describes the ancient tribesmen, their trackways, enclosures, forests and hunting, the historic Old England which guarded the oft-contested great fordway of the Thames, the numerous weapons of ancient strife discovered there, and the double palisade work which was of no avail against Caesar. The importance of the Roman land survey and settlement during three and a half centuries (a subject too often under-valued) is clearly shown from its remaining landmarks upon the territory once attached to Londinium and the basis of the hidage returns to Domesday. Several interesting chapters are bestowed upon the settlement of the county by the Middle-Saxons. (Book ref. 125244) £20.00 The payment methods accepted by the seller, Charles Bossom , are shown in the right-hand column. |
