PREFACE: THOSE engaged in classical teaching in this country have long felt the need of an Atlas which is good and at the same time inexpensive. The defects of those hitherto obtainable are (i) failure to show, with the requisite prominence, the natural features of the countries, (2) lack of clearness, owing to the congestion of names in important sections of the maps, and the confusion created by the engraving of names across lracliured mountains. Both these defects the Editor of this Atlas has sought to avoid :-on the one hand, by adopting the system of coloured contours which he has already used in Mr. Murray's Handy Classical Maps" ; on the other, by having all the names necessary for the purposes of ordinary classical study printed in a peculiarly clear andlegible type. The unanimous approval with which the system of coloured contours was welcomed in the earlier publication has induced the Editor to use the same method in an Atlas which will be largely used for historical purposes. The configuration of a country must necessarily be the most important factor in its history, since it exercises an influence not merely on events but also on the character of its population. This fact has become much more widely recognised in recent years, and no expense has been spared to emphasise it in this publication. It will be noticed that owing to the mountain ranges being no longer engraved it is possible to read any name with ease. Amongst other new features in the Atlas is a sheet containing fourteen plans of famous battlefields of Ancient History ; these will he of interest both to teachers and students. A very full index contributes its share to the completeness of the volume. Its small price will bring it within the reach not merely of students at the Universities, but also of boys at school. G. B. GRUNDY, D.Litt., Corpus Christi College, Oxford. September, 1904. PREFACE TO TFIE SECOND EDITION The chief additions which have been made to the Atlas consist of Contours to show the heights on the maps of some of the battlefields. An additional contour in the map of Asia Minor, which will bring out more clearly the physical features of this region. Various misprints have been corrected, and a few alterations made, especially in the map of Roman Britain. G. B. G. April, 1917. (Book ref. 126444)  £30.00
