This systematic study of the schools of Greek painted pottery from the 11th to the 1st century B.C., with also a brief account of black-painted and relief wares, has been the standard textbook on the subject for ten years. The main part of the book describes the stylistic development, and there are chapters on shapes, techniques, inscriptions on pots, chronology, the pottery industry, uses for other studies, practical advice and the history of the study of vase-painting. In this second edition, Professor Cook has revised the text to take account of more recent findings and research, and the bibliography has been brought up to date. A few new figures and plates have been provided. The author is Laurence Professor of Classical Archaeology in the University of Cambridge.
