Numerous illustrations / plates. 190 Pages clean and tight. INTRODUCTORY NOTE: JOSEPH ZAEHNSDORF was born at Pesth in 1816. He served his apprenticeship with Herr Krupp of Stuttgart and then moved on as a journeyman to work for Stephan in Vienna. He had a brother who was an established jeweller in London, and on a visit to London he decided to stay on and work for Wesley, and then Mackenzie, who at that time was considered to be the best bookbinder in London. Here he remained until 1842 when he set up in business on his own account, the business flourishing until he died in 1886, when his son, born in 1853 in London, took over. Joseph Zaehnsdorf fits was a practical bookbinder, and the author of The Art of Bookbinding, first published in 1880, then revised and enlarged for the 1890 edition. The Art of Bookbinding has become the bookbinder's Bible, and no apprentice or amateur has completed his training without reference to the very rare and limited copies that can occasionally be found in printing school libraries. This reprint has been produced especially for students who are taking City and Guilds examinations, as well as for the Board Room libraries throughout the world. Most of the answers to City and Guilds questions, which deal with hand bookbinding, are to be found in this extremely valuable work, and the books illustrated as Grolier and Renaissance can be seen in the library of The British Museum, London. 1967. R. St. G. Moody, Managing Director Zaehnsdorf Ltd., Vice-President, Master Bookbinders Alliance of London. (Book ref. 126781)  £21.00
