Earl, Donald C. The Political Thought of Sallust , Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1961.

First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo Dust jacket complete, unclipped 22s. 6d. price on flap. Blue cloth with gilt titling on spine. No ownership inscription. Prelims, 132 pages clean and tight. Very scarce scholarly text. This is the first full-length book on Sallust in English for over a hundred years and, although intended primarily for classical scholars, will interest students of history. Dr Earl, in studying the works individually, sets out to explain the main idea which Sallust adopted as a foundation for his writing. He first examines The Prologues and similar generalizing passages, and shows that Sallust's chief concern was with a certain concept of virtus which he goes on to define. He considers the development of the particular tradition in which Sallust's concept is placed and shows how Sallust applied his general ideas to the particular events of his narratives and how they have affected his choice and arrangement of topics. Finally, Dr Earl gives an account of the particular purpose which Sallust intended for his work, and how far his interpretation is a sincere attempt to show the crisis in Roman politics. ref.122372 (Book ref. 126828)  £138.00
