Scarce copy. The first facsimile to be made of one of the finest sixteenth century Italian writing books. Essemplare is Giovan Francesco Cresci's first manual, printed at Rome in 1560. Cresci, unlike many-writing masters of his time, knew that geometric methods could not recreate the traditional letter forms of the Trajan column and Cresci's capitals represented the traditional letters in their original vitality. This facsimile is made from a fine copy of the 1578 edition. It is accompanied by a translation of the text and an introduction by A. S. Osley.
