RENEWED interest in the use of the microscopical characters of the vegetative organs as an aid to the more accurate classification of the Dicotyledons has focused attention on the need for a modern work of reference on this subject. In spite of the numerous publications on the structure of wood that have appeared in recent years, no general reference book on systematic anatomy has been published since 1908 when the well-known English translation of Solereder's Systematic Anatomy of the Dicotyledons became available. In order to meet the need for a new treatise, the authors of Anatomy of the Dicotyledons have not only brought together, for the first time, the results of investigations that have been published since 1908, and combined them with data given by Solereder, but each has contributed the results of his own research extending over a period of more than twenty years. The histology of each family is described separately under headings such as Leaf, Young Stem, Wood, Root and Ecological Anatomy, and, for many families, a section on Taxonomic Notes has been added. Much of the descriptive matter is original. This applies particularly to the detailed descriptions of the wood, nearly all of which are based largely on unpublished data, whilst many new facts about the structure of other parts of the plants have also been included. The book is primarily concerned with systematic anatomy, but is intended not only for taxonomists, but also for those engaged in other branches of botany and forestry. The inclusion of many particulars of the structure and .economic uses of plant products is intended to widen the scope of the book still further, so that it will appeal to pharmacognosists, economic botanists, and to those interested in timber.
