Although Thoreau is a tremendously popular writer, the bulk of his work rarely reaches the average reader. Year after year, in his personal journals, Thoreau recorded his observations on the world around him: his meditations on the inner life, first drafts of essays and passages later used in his books-including Walden-as well as bird and flower lists and random jottings. But the Journal is so voluminous that few but scholars read it all the way through. Recognizing that many sections of the Journal are actually brief, self-contained essays which stand as finished creations, Charles Anderson, a leading expert on Thoreau, has selected about 250 of these "miniatures" and brought them together in one volume. In addition, Mr. Anderson has written an introductory essay on the Journal and a sixty page Afterword, THE WRITER'S ART, analyzing Thoreau's methods of composition. Although the essays, which range from about one hundred to two thousand words in length, have been chosen solely on the basis of their literary excellence, they are written on a wide variety of themes and in several styles. Many will strike the modern reader as surprisingly relevant to today. The author has arranged the essays according to seven groupings-People, Places, Wildlife, Seasons, Events, Ideas, and Essays-but the emphasis is on the unity and finish of the individual miniatures. Confirming Thoreau's distinction as a literary artist, Thoreau's World represents his highest achievement as a writer, second only to Walden.
