WAGNER, Anthony Sir. (General Editor) Dictionary of British Arms. 2 Vols , London: The Society of Antiquaries of London, 1992.Hard Cover. Very Good. 4to 0854312587 Blue cloth with bright gilt lettering on spine. This volume is the first fruit of a project which has had a particularly long and difficult history. Started as the result of a bequest in 1926 from Lieutenant-Colonel G. B. Croft Lyons for the production of a revised edition of Papworth's Ordinary of Arms, it has over the years been worked on by many hands, and undergone many vicissitudes. In 1979 it was decided that a computerised record should be made of some 114,000 of the vast collection of index cards which had been accumulated, and that this should be used, in the first instance, for the preparation of a Dictionary of British Arms, and specifically an Ordinary, down to A.D.1530. I am sure that it will be of great use to scholars in a number of different fields, and I should like to take this opportunity of recording the thanks of the Society to all those who have contributed by their labours to the creation of the corpus, and particularly of congratulating the team which over the past few years has brought the Dictionary to the stage of publication. In particular, a special debt of gratitude is owed to Sir Anthony Wagner, who has been intimately associated with the project for so many years and who has acted as guide and mentor to all the heraldic scholars who have been involved in seeing it to fruition.
