The Art of the Map - Maker is an ancient one, but it was in the Sixteenth Century that accurate cartography first became established in England. Among the private muniments deposited owners in the Essex Record Office Chelmsford there is a large number of manuscript maps of Essex estates and covering three centuries. With the Enclosure Award and Tithe Award ad official maps and plans, they offer a rich field for study, and the present book gives-perhaps for the first time) a comprehensive survey of the cartographical material existing in a single English county. In these maps-more than a thousand in number -we see the changing face of the countryside, while the decorative art of the individual craftsman gradually gives place to the precise skill of the technician. Something of a discovery is the work of John Walker, senior, and John Walker, junior, who, in the reigns of Elizabeth and James I, made for Essex landowners a number of estate maps outstanding in their interest and a delight to the eye. Nearly twenty of their maps are now in the County Record Office. The Catalogue is illustrated by six coloured plates and numerous half-tone plates from representative maps, and an introduction, not too technical, is s, provided. (Book ref. 129741) £23.00 The payment methods accepted by the seller, Charles Bossom , are shown in the right-hand column. |
