FEW words of introduction may not be out of place to explain how my attention was first drawn to the Collar of S S, and why I now publish the result of my enquiries. On Assize Sunday, November 1887, the late Lord Chief Justice Coleridge attended the Assize Service at York Minster, and I was most struck with the magnificent Collar on his shoulder. He kindly allowed me the following day to take it to a local Jeweller, who expressed great admiration for it; after some examination pronouncing it to be of the date of Henry VII. As I was returning home, I was accosted by a neighbour with a request that I would give a Lecture during the ensuing winter, and on consenting to do so, he further enquired whether I could tell him the subject, to which I answered " Yes, the Collar of S S." "`What is that ? " he said. "I don't know," I replied, " but I mean to find out, and if you will come to the Lecture you shall hear." The Lecture in due course of time was prepared and delivered, and reported in the local Press. I sent copies to the Lord Chief Justice who expressed himself most pleased, and asked for several more. In March 1897, Lord Russell of killowen came to York, as Lord Chief Justice, and at once applied to me for some information as to the Collar of S S. I endeavoured to recapitulate to him all that I knew of the subject. In December 1906, Lord Alverstone, the present Lord Chief Justice, came and expressed great curiosity to know something of the history of the "Bauble" which it was his privilege to wear. I told him that I was very sorry but that I had lost the Lecture and quite forgotten all about the subject. At his request, I endeavoured to obtain a report from the files at the Printing Office, but failed, and could only express my regret that I was unable to comply with his wishes. Sometime after, however, I suddenly discovered the missing documents and thereupon wrote to his Lordship and said that I would have it printed, and as a Lawyer's son, would be much pleased if he would accept the dedication as the Head of the Bar. He at once consented, but the many claims on my time prevented my carrying this into effect until last month, when a bad cold confined me to the house, and gave me the opportunity which I had long desired. I found, however, on reading the Lecture that it only imperfectly dealt with the subject, for the additional information which 1 had since acquired was not mentioned therein, and I therefore determined to re-write it and to publish it with the many illustrations which I had obtained."
