Two volumes (one of text, one of 206 plates). Frontispiece to each volume, illustrations in the text throughout. 8vo (10 x 6 1/4 inches), pages: xv:696 & 27:ccvi(plates). Original green cloth, sides with ornamental borders in blind enclosing gilt blocked illustration. Splits to cloth of lower outer joint of volume 2 (joint very firm), headbands bruised, corners a little rubbed as is the lower joint of volume 1. Some foxing to prelims. Volume 2 recased at some time with new endpapers. Overall a very good copy, the bindings generally good and bright. From the library of the eminent archaeologist Professor John Davies Evans (1925-2011) with his bookplate & signature. He was director of the Institute of Archaeology (now part of University College, London) from 1973 to 1989; renowned especially for his research into the prehistory of the Mediterranean, particularly the prehistoric cultures of Malta.
