WHEELER CUFFE, Charlotte I THE BURMA ALPHABET (In English and Burmese). From the original sketches by Charlotte I. Wheeler Cuffe , .Soft Cover. Very Good. Not dated - c. 1920s. The book is sewn, with brown covers which are rubbed along the edges, ¼" tear at bottom front edge. Title-page and last page have just a few light spots of foxing, the rest of the pages are in fine condition, except for last page which has a very tiny tear at the bottom edge. There is a watercolour on the outside of both covers. Only part of the front of the envelope remains, section showing title etc. With 32 pages - not numbered - including a' List of the Illustrations' explaining the main subject in the picture. There are two letters of the alphabet on a page, each letter depicted by a delightful watercolour and a caption in English, the page opposite the illustrations just has the caption written in Burmese. Originally - Sold on behalf of the Fund for the Queen Alexandra "Children's" Hospital, Mandalay, of which her Majesty is Patroness, The hospital was opened in 1921. Charlotte Wheeler Cuffe was an Irish botanical artist. Her husband Sir Otway Wheeler Cuffe was an Imperial official in Burma. They lived in Burma for about 25 years, and then returned to Ireland. Charlotte specialized in drawing and painting orchids, and the landscapes of Burma and Ireland. She left most of her collection to the Irish National Botanic Gardens. In 1967 she died at the age of nearly one hundred years in Killenny, Ireland (14½"h x 10¼"w) (36.5cms x 26cms) approx.
