The author looks briefly at Macktintosh's early life and education, and the development of the 'Glasgow Style' inspired by 'The Four' which included Margaret and Frances MacDonald and Herbert MacNair. The focal point in the first section is the exploration of the Glasgow-Vienna link, describing the significant fusion of talent and ideas between students of the Glasgow School of Art and those of the Otto Wagner School including Klimt and Hoffman. The second half of the book is devoted to the great architectural achievements of Macintosh. His greatest achievement was the Glasgow School of Art, built in two stages between 1897 and 1909. Mackintosh made many beautiful sketches and watercolours and some drawings and plans of projects which were never executed. His best works are presented with full commentaries on the major projects.
