The Horseley family estate was purchased in 1792 by three entrepreneurs to develop coal mining. They extended the canals to provide transport, and then moved into iron making around 1808 and started manufacturing marine steam engines and iron boats in about 1817. Next came cast iron bridges in 1816 with a swing bridge in East India Docks, London, and many more bridges over the following years for the canal railway systems and for countries overseas.
