Folio Matthew Paris became a monk of St. Albans in 1217, and succeeded Roger Wendover as historiographer of that abbey in 1236. He drew his information from many documentary sources including papal bulls and royal letters and from conversations with eye-witnesses of the events narrated. (...) His style is graphic; his view is broad; and his opinions are expressed with fervour. He condemns what he regarded as abuses of the court and church; he rebukes pope, king, nobles, and clergy, when he deems them worthy of blame. Matthew was a man of many interests and attainments'. Ex Worth Abbey Library with label on pastedown and accession number at foot of title page.The half title has been underlined in ink and on the reverse is an early note neatly written in Latin about some mispagination but the text is continuous.
