Hughes, Hugh, Steam Locomotives in India Part 3 Broad Gauge

Hughes, Hugh: Steam Locomotives in India Part 3 - Broad Gauge , UK: Continental Railway Circle 1979

First edition, paperback, very good condition, uncreased illustrated clothcard covers, 96 pages, b/w photo illustrations, b/w maps-------With the knowledge that both the large Indian locomotive works at Chittatanjan and Varanasi have been concentrating mostly on broad (5 ft 6in) gauge diesel and electric products for some years, past enthusiasts could be forgiven for thinking that little of note remains for those interested chiefly in steam traction, particularly on the main lines. But this is in fact far from the truth and it is significant that in 1976-77 steam trains still accounted for no less than 61% of all the passenger traffic on Indian railways (measured in train-kilometres), and 29% of the freight traffic. Bearing in mind that the broad gauge lines carried 75% of the total passenger traffic, and 86% of the freight, it is clear that the 4921 broad gauge steam engines in stock on 31 March 1977 were being kept quite busy. Admittedly just over three thousand of these locomotives belonged to two standard classes and this fact makes it essential for the visiting enthusiast to have some idea of where the smaller classes are allocated so that he can make the most of the variety still available. In addition there is a need for lists of the locomotives concerned, complete with building data and some historical background, as this information is not readily available elsewhere. This books aims at providing these facts in a convenient form and the layout is very similar to the metre gauge volume published in 1977. Most of the photographs were taken in recent years but some of historical interest have also been included.----- Contents:Preface & Acknowledgements;1) Introduction;2) Broad gauge railways;3) Locomotive development;4) Series 7000-21999 (Standard Classes); 5) Series 22000-23999 (IRS Designs); 6) Nos. 24000-24035, 26000-26319, 38000 SERIES (SER);7) Nos. 24036-24152, 26320-26523, 33000 SERIES (CR & SCR); 8) Nos. 24153-24266, 26632-26996, 34000 SERIES (ER);9) Nos. 24267-24337, 26524-26581, 39000 SERIES (WR); 10) Nos. 24338-24391, 26582-26631, 37000 SERIES (SR); 11) Nos. 24392-24569, 26997-27159, 36000 SERIES (NR); 12) Port Railways; 13) Other Industrial Railways; 14) Representative Dimensions; 15) Present Situation And The Transport Museum; Appendix: A/Cwd Locomotives (Book ref. 2964)  £25.00
