Fine and Rare Books in the Heart of Britain's West Country
PIKE W , The Barren Ground of Northern Canada BRIGHT, FRESH COPY WITH ARMORIAL BOOKPLATE

PIKE (W).: The Barren Ground of Northern Canada. BRIGHT, FRESH COPY WITH ARMORIAL BOOKPLATE , Macmillan, 1892

8vo., First Edition, with 2 folding maps in green and black, half-title, facing leaf and rear preliminaries lightly spotted; original diced green cloth, gilt back, uncut, dark green endpapers, small age-stain at lower edge of upper board else a remarkably bright, clean, crisp copy. With the separately printed corrigenda slip, 56pp publisher's catalogue bound in at rear, and the fine nineteenth century engraved armorial bookplate of Henry Ashworth James on front paste-down. 'This, then, was the sole object of my journey; to try to penetrate this unknown land, to see the Musk-ox, and find out as much as I could about their habits, and the habits of the Indians who go in pursuit of them every year' (Preface). Includes as an appendix Professor G. M. Dawson's paper 'On Some of the Larger Unexplored Regions of Canada'. The flaw on front board notwithstanding, a lovely copy of a very scarce work. (Book ref. 19492)  £162.00
