STANLEY (H.M).: In Darkest Africa. Or the Quest, Rescue and Retreat of Emin Governor of Equatoria. New Edition, corrected and revised throughout. [With a new Preface by the Author] , Sampson Low Marston & Co., 1897

8vo., with an engraved frontispiece (original tissue guard present), 35 engraved plates, very numerous wood-engraved illustrations (a number full-page) in the text and a large folding coloured map (one or two small repairs at fold edges not affecting engraved surface), free endpapers moderately browned; original dark red pictorial cloth, upper board blocked in gilt, backstrip lettered in gilt, very neatly rebacked with old backstrip laid down, a very good, bright, clean copy. With 2pp publisher's catalogue bound in at end. A handsome copy of Stanley's famous account of his 1886 Emin Pasha Relief Expedition, first published in two volumes in 1890. His route along the Congo brought terrible hardship and considerable loss of life before he returned with Pasha at the end of 1890. This corrected and revised issue has a new preface written by Stanley expressly for this edition. (Book ref. 19496)  £84.00
