Michael Theodore Cherniavsky (1920-1992) was a renowned and long-serving (1948-1966) master of history at Christ's Hospital School and subsequently Professor of History at the University of Waterloo, Ontario from 1967 to 1983. Educated at Westminster, he was appointed Brackenbury Scholar at Balliol College, Oxford during which period he acquired this copy. Jowett's definitive translation, dedicated to Viscount Sherbrooke, was first published in 1881 when the translator was Regius Professor of Greek at Oxford. This revised edition, begun after Jowett's death in 1893, was prepared by W.H. Forbes and Evelyn Abbot. Scarce in this condition.
