Fine and Rare Books in the Heart of Britain's West Country

DU CHAILLU (P.B).: A Journey to Ashango-Land: and further Penetration into Equatorial Africa. 'DISCOVERER OF THE GORILLA' , John Murray, 1867

8vo., First Edition, with an engraved frontispiece, engraved title-vignette, 21 engraved plates and large folding map at end, a few leaves lightly chafed at fore-edges, map mildly age-stained; handsomely bound in dark red full morocco, back gilt with five raised bands, second and fourth compartments lettered and ruled in gilt, all other compartments tooled and ruled in gilt, uncut, gilt image from original front board preserved and mounted on new leaf at front, a most attractive copy ideal as a gift or for presentation. With 32pp publisher's catalogue bound in at end. The author's second book is a vividly-written account of his second [1863-1865] expedition around the delta of the Ogooue in what is now Gabon. Here he is able to confirm his 'discovery' (perhaps more accurately 'rediscovery') of the Gorilla, a species previously unseen by outsiders since Biblical times, and the actual discovery of the Giant Otter Shrew (Potamagale velox); both species are illustrated. A lovely copy of a very scarce account. (Book ref. 19693)  £580.00
