Roy. 8vo., First Extra-Illustrated Edition, Large Paper, on laid paper, with a sepia-toned frontispiece, 47 sepia-toned plates (16 double-page) and endpaper maps; beige cloth, backstrip blocked with brown label lettered in gilt, backstrip [only] moderately browned else a very good, bright, crisp, clean copy in publisher's board slip-case with printed paper label. This edition, of which an unspecified number was issued, contains 16 plates and 8 double-page panoramas not present in the standard first edition published in the same year. It is itself found in two binding style (see below). There are at least five issues of the first edition: a) the limited numbered Extra-Illustrated edition; b) the Large Paper Extra-Illustrated edition in holland with roan label; the slip-case is almost always missing; c) the Large Paper Extra-Illustrated edition in cloth with blocked label (the present copy); the slip-case is almost always missing; d) a 'de luxe' edition in blue morocco; e) the ordinary trade edition.
