AESOP. OGILBY (J). [HOLLAR (W), illus]. MINER (E), intro.: The Fables of Aesop paraphras'd in Verse [adorn'd with Sculpture and illustrated with Annotations]. (1668). Introduction by Earl Miner. [Facsimile reissue]. NEAR FINE COPY IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS , William Andrews Clark Memorial Library, University of California, Los Angeles CA, 1965

8vo., First Edition thus, with 80 fine plates by Hollar, an engraved headpiece and historiated initial; original buff wrappers printed in black, a near fine copy. Issued as a Special Publication of the Augustan Reprint Society. Ogilby's illustrated Aesop was first published in 1650 with illustrations by Francis Cleyn, but it was in 1665, following his return from Ireland, that he embarked on the production of an even more majestic version illustrated by Hollar. Much of this edition was lost in the Great Fire; consequently the work is most often known through the splendid second Hollar folio of 1668. This facsimile is a high-quality photographic reprint of the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library copy of the second Hollar edition. Very scarce. (Book ref. 19899)  £88.00
