Dilly, 1796 (5th edn)The full title is: A Treatise on the Police of the Metropolis, containing a detail of the various crimes and misdemeanours by which public and private property and security are, at present, injured and endangered and suggesting remedies for their prvention. The Scots-born Dr Colquhoun became a magistrate in London in 1792 and was well known as an indefatigable reformer and an influential voice in the creation of a full-time police force. 444pp plus index (xviiipp) and prelims (xxvipp) contemporary calf binding, gilt titles and raised bands on spine; top quarter-inch of title page neatly cut (no loss to text) and pp253-256 removed (possibly through 'censorship' as they dealt with sex offences), corners and lower edges rubbed o/w VG+.
