Bolingbroke, 1678-1751 was a freethinker and politician. A key figure in the Tory Party of Anne's Reign, he became Secretary of State in 1710. He opposed the Hanoverian succession and fled to France after 1715 to become the Old Pretender's Secretary of State. He returned home in 1723. These papers were saved by his Undersecretary and passed thereby into the possession of the Earl of Hardwicke. This was their first publication. This was the first and only edition.
