Gillies, John: The History of Ancient Greece, Its Colonies and Conquests. , London: T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1820.This is the rare eight-volume set of Gillies great classic, as published in 1820. Part 1 is the four-volume sixth-edition of the History that first appeared in 1786: Part 2 is a four-volume "New Edition, with Corrections and Additions ". Gillies saw these eight volumes as one work, and says in the Preface to Part 2 "In the compass of eight volumes, I have thus attempted a work...wanting in modern literature." The subtitle of Part 1 is "From the Earliest Accounts Till the Division of the Macedonian Empire in the East; Including the History of Literature, Philosophy, and the Fine Arts". The subtitle of Part 2 is "Embracing the History of the Ancient World, from the Dominion of Alexander to that of Augustus; With a survey of Preceding Periods, and a Continuation of the History of Arts and Letters". Part 1: Volume 1, xii+515 pp, with engraved folding map "of the Western Division of the Grecian Colonies, & Conquests"; Volume II, viii+413 pp; Volume III, viii+522 pp; Volume IV, viii+452+ 59 pp unpaginated Index. Part 2: Volume I, xv+563 pp. with engraved folding map of the Eastern Division of the Grecian Colonies and Conquests; Volume II, viii+570 pp; Volume III, viii+519 pp; Volume IV, viii+631pp, of which 525-631is the index. Bound in contemporary full polished calf, five panelled spines with decorarttive gilt panels and lining, with 13 original spine labels and 3 matching modern replacement labels. The set shows some wear, rubbing, etc, but it has been professionally restored, with spine extremities strengthened where neccessary. The maps are in very good condition, texts are tight and clean, there is some old worm damage to endpapers, there is the signature of Thomas B Parry on the title pages of each volume, and a longer inscription relating to the acquisition of the books on the front pastedown of the final volume.
