The spine labels are a little sun faded, making them lighter than similar bindings. Presumably the owner using them as bookmarks. A nice copy of this first edition, The contemporary binding has been carried out to create a matching binding for the first owner's collection of Scott. We have several other Scott first editions in this binding. This is the second issue of the first edition. The crest to the boards, boar passant, Gules bristled or charged on the body with three annulets d'or, was that of Richard Hobart Fitzgibbon 3rd Earl of Clare, 1795-1864. He was MP for Co. Limerick 1818-1841 and Lord Lieutenant of the county from 1831. The family home was Mountshannon at Castleconnell, where he had a good reputation as landlord. The line became extinct on his death, his son having died at the charge of the Light Brigade, Balaclava (Book ref. 13098)  £210.00
