Bevington, S.M., Blaksley, J.H., Jennings, J.R. & Tyrwhitt, J. Leisure Pursuits Outside the Family Circle - an account of an investigation carried out by the Institute's investigators into the leisure pursuits outside the family circle in a County Town, a Satellite Town, in a Rural District & in a Holiday Camp , London: National Institute of Industrial Psychology, 1939.Tall quarto, typed, xeroxed and stapled, three simple maps, pp (2), ii, iv, 137, staples rusted, title page loose and frayed and re-attached with two pins (also rusted), the final page has a similar fate but has a portion missing with slight loss of text. A remarkable survey of British life immediately before the Second World War and a rare survival, as presumably copies were only sent to a few interested parties. The three respective sites were Ipswich, Slough and West Kesteven. The holiday camp was not identified but was on the East Coast, so was almost certainly Butlins at Skegness, which was opened in 1936, though Butlins at Clacton followed in 1938. [From the library of the naturalist and conservationist Richard Fitter whose early career was as a social scientist. In 1936 he joined the research staff of the Institute of Political and Economic Planning. There he worked for the next four years, refining the skills in obtaining clarity from masses of heterogeneous information that were to stand him in good stead as a compiler of works of natural history. In 1940 he moved to Mass-Observation, which was engaged in an analysis of "ordinary" life in Britain].
