First edition (??) published by L. Upcott Gill, 1889. Illustrated with engravings throughout, small 8vo, pp viii, 134, (the edges are rough and untrimmed as was the fashion then and some have been opened slightly carelessly), original dark grey bevelled cloth, lettering on the spine and on the upper cover in a silvery white. Contents a little marked and rather weak, with hinges cracking, ink marks to page vi/vii, small inked number 47 on front endpaper, cloth marked, rubbed, wrinkled and worn with several ring marks to upper and lower covers, head and tail of spine frayed. [This would appear to be a scarce first edition; there is a publishers' note on the verso of the title page advertising the other three volumes that make up the series, and also a large paper edition of the whole work. There are four pages of adverts at the rear, followed by the publishers' 24-page catalogue number 2 dated 1888, and then a few more period adverts for Borwick's baking powder, Rowlands macassar oil, Latreille's Excelsior Lotion for whiskers and moustachios etc.] (Book ref. 006039)  £20.00
